Nisula is a small, quiet place in Houghton County, Michigan, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Nisula is located in Laird Township along M-38, about 14.5 miles (23.3 km) west of Baraga.

Today, Nisula is mostly a farming community. You can see smooth, rolling fields and a few homes. There are also some modern farm buildings. Nisula has its own post office with the ZIP code 49952.

The Story of Nisula: How the Community Began

Nisula was first settled under a different name: Faro. In 1894, people from Finland who had settled in Baraga started moving to this area. They were looking for new places to live and farm.

Who Was August Nisula?

A post office opened in Nisula on July 7, 1903. The community was named after August Nisula. He was born in Reisjärvi, Finland, in 1849. August and his wife, Saara, were among the first Finnish families to move to Laird Township.

People remembered August Nisula as a very large and strong man. They said he seemed like he was meant to be a pioneer, someone who helps start a new settlement. August Nisula became the first postmaster for the community. Because of his role, the postal department decided to name the town after him.

Nisula's Railroad Connection

In the same year, 1903, a Michigan Central Railroad station also opened in Nisula. This was an important step for the community. The railroad helped people and goods travel to and from Nisula, connecting it to other places.
