History of the Niue Soccer Team
The Niue national soccer team played its only international matches at the 1983 South Pacific Games. These games took place in Apia, which is the capital of Samoa. In their first game, Niue lost 0–14 to Tahiti. Two days later, they played against Papua New Guinea and lost 0–19. These were the only times the team played against other countries.
Membership in Soccer Organizations
The Niue Island Soccer Association used to be a member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). The OFC helps organize soccer in the Pacific region. However, in 2021, Niue's membership was removed. This happened because the team had not been active for a long time.
Niue was never a member of FIFA. FIFA is the main international organization for soccer. Because they were not a FIFA member, the Niue team could not enter the FIFA World Cup. The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament in the world.
Recent Soccer Activity
Even though the national team was inactive, soccer is still played in Niue. In November 2023, an official 11-versus-11 soccer match was played. This was the first such game in many years. The match was between a team representing the south of Niue and a team from the north.
