Nocatee is a large, planned community in Florida. It is mostly located in St. Johns County. It is also known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it is a community that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data.

In 2020, Nocatee had a population of 22,503 people. This was a big jump from 4,524 people in 2010. Nocatee is part of the larger Jacksonville area. The community has many different neighborhoods. Some neighborhoods are even designed for specific age groups. Nocatee combines homes with schools, parks, and places for fun. It also has offices, shops, and restaurants. A small part of Nocatee is in Duval County, within Jacksonville city limits. However, the official CDP is entirely within St. Johns County. Nocatee is close to Ponte Vedra Beach and covers about 13,323 acres of land.

A Look Back: Nocatee's History

Construction on Nocatee began in 2005. The company that created Nocatee is called The PARC Group. Its leader, Roger O'Steen, started the group in 1989. He was very involved in planning Nocatee and other communities.

Nocatee is about 25 square miles, which is around 14,000 acres. More than 60% of this land is kept as a natural preserve. This helps protect the environment and wildlife. The name "Nocatee" is thought to come from the Timucuan Indian word for "peaceful river." However, experts say there isn't a known Timucua word that means exactly that. The word for "river" in Timucua is ibi, and "peaceful" is afatimo. There was an older town named Nocatee in DeSoto County. Its name might have come from a Seminole Creek word, nakate, meaning "What is it?".
