The Noire River (which means "Black River" in English) is a smaller river in Quebec, Canada. It flows through several towns like Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Pont-Rouge, and Neuville. This river is part of the Portneuf Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The area around the Black River is mostly used for farming. Forestry is also an important activity. Roads like Route 365, Route 367, and Autoroute 40 help people travel through the valley.
During winter, the river's surface usually freezes from early December to late March. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons and how much rain or snow falls. The biggest flood usually happens in March or April.
Where the Black River Flows
The Black River starts in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures at a place called Étang Martel. This starting point is about 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) northwest of the railway tracks. It's also about 4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) northwest of Autoroute 40.
From its source, the Black River travels about 16.6 kilometres (10.3 mi). As it flows, the river drops about 79 metres (259 ft) in height.
River's Journey
- For the first 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi), the river flows southwest. It passes through forests and near two small villages, eventually reaching the railway.
- Next, it flows south for about 6.6 kilometres (4.1 mi). During this part, it makes a loop to the west and crosses Route 365 twice before reaching Autoroute 40.
- Finally, the river flows southeast for 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) until it reaches its end.
Where it Ends
The Black River flows into the rivière aux Pommes in Neuville. From there, the water continues down the rivière aux Pommes for about 7.0 kilometres (4.3 mi). This part of the river winds through farmland.
The rivière aux Pommes then joins the Jacques-Cartier River. The water then travels southeast for about 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) along the Jacques-Cartier River until it reaches the big Saint-Laurent River.
Why it's Called "Noire"
The name "rivière Noire" means "Black River" in French. This name was officially given to the river on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is like a special group that names places in Quebec. The river might have been named "Black" because its waters look dark, perhaps due to the riverbed or surrounding trees.
