About Nolin River Lake
Nolin River Lake is a special type of lake called a reservoir. A reservoir is like a giant storage tank for water. It is built by creating a dam across a river.
Why Was It Built?
The United States Army Corps of Engineers built Nolin River Lake. This group helps manage many of our country's waterways. They finished building the dam in 1963. The main reason for building it was to help control floods. This means the lake helps stop rivers from overflowing their banks. The idea for the dam was approved way back in 1938.
How Big Is It?
The size of Nolin River Lake changes throughout the year. In the winter, it covers about 2,890 acres (11.7 km2). But in the summer, it gets much bigger! It can grow to about 5,795 acres (23.45 km2). This change helps manage water levels and prevent flooding.
