Non-binary gender facts for kids
A non-binary gender is any gender that is not male or female. People who are non-binary do not feel like they fit into the usual ideas of being a boy or a girl.
The non-binary pride flag was created in 2014. Each color on the flag has a special meaning:
- Yellow stands for people whose gender is outside the usual male/female categories.
- Purple represents those who feel their gender is a mix of, or between, male and female.
- Black shows people who feel they do not have a gender.
- White includes those who feel they are many or all genders.
International Non-Binary People's Day is celebrated every year on July 14. This day helps to raise awareness and celebrate non-binary people around the world.
Understanding Non-Binary
Being non-binary means that someone's gender identity is different from what is usually expected. It is not about who someone is attracted to. It is about how they feel about themselves. Some non-binary people might feel like both a boy and a girl. Others might feel like neither. Some might feel their gender changes over time.
Pronouns
Many non-binary people use they/them as their pronoun. This is a way to refer to someone without saying "he" or "she." For example, you might say, "Alex went to the park, and they had fun." Some non-binary people might use other pronouns, like "he/him" or "she/her," or even new pronouns. It is always good to ask someone what pronouns they use.
