Nong's Khao Man Gai is a popular Thai restaurant in Portland, Oregon. It's famous for serving a special dish called Khao Man Gai. This dish is a tasty chicken and rice meal that comes from Southeast Asia.
The Story of Nong's Khao Man Gai
Nong's Khao Man Gai was started by a woman named Nong Poonsukwattana in 2009. Nong moved to Oregon from Bangkok, Thailand in 2003. She arrived with very little money and just one suitcase.
Nong first worked as a waitress at different restaurants. Later, she got a job at Pok Pok, another Thai restaurant in Portland. She was the only Thai cook there.
Starting the Food Cart
In 2009, Nong bought a food cart from Craigslist. A food cart is like a small kitchen on wheels. She paid $1,300 for it. She opened Nong's Khao Man Gai as a food cart at Southwest 10th Avenue and Alder Street.
She sold her chicken and rice dish every day. She kept selling until she ran out of food! This showed how popular her food was.

Opening a Restaurant
Later, Nong opened her first regular restaurant. This type of restaurant is called a "brick and mortar" place. It means it's a permanent building, not a food cart. This restaurant is in the Buckman neighborhood of southeast Portland.
Nong's on TV
In 2014, Nong's restaurant was even featured on a TV show. It appeared on Chopped, a cooking competition show.
