Nora Chapa Mendoza was born in Weslaco, Texas. Her parents were from Mexico. She went to art schools in Michigan. She studied at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. She also attended Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.

Nora Chapa Mendoza is famous for her abstract paintings. These paintings often have hidden shapes and meanings. Her art often explores important ideas. These include themes like human rights and people moving to new places. Her Mexican heritage and experiences in Detroit greatly influence her art.

In 1981, Nora Chapa Mendoza opened Galeria Mendoza in Detroit. This was a very important step. It became the first real Latin American art gallery in Detroit.

Her art has been shown all over the world. Many people collect her paintings. Famous collectors include former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer. Singer Aretha Franklin and actor Edward James Olmos also own her work. Even former General Motors president Mr. Jack Smith has her art.

Big companies also collect her art. These include Ford offices in New York. Edison Plaza and General Motors offices in Detroit also have her work. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan in Detroit is another collector.

In 2011, she was named the Visual Artist of the year. This award came from the Wayne County Council for Arts, History & Humanities.
