How Nora Started Writing for Kids
At first, Nora tried writing books for adults. She worked for about five years to get her stories published. During a writing class, someone suggested she try writing for children instead. Nora decided to change her focus.
In 1999, her first book for young readers was published. It was called What Every Girl (Except Me) Knows. This story came from feelings she had inside her about a "sad motherless little girl." In her book Surfacing, Nora writes about how sad feelings can affect even young children. She shows how a family tragedy can turn into feelings of guilt or blame.
