Norbert Klein's Journey
Early Life and Studies
Norbert Klein was born in a place called Brunzeif. This area was part of Austrian Silesia at the time. When he was 19, in 1885, he began studying to become a priest. He went to a school in Olmütz.
After two years, in 1887, he joined the Teutonic Order. This was a special religious group. On July 27, 1890, he officially became a priest. Two years later, in 1892, he made his final promises to the Order. In 1903, he was given the role of Prior in Troppau.
Becoming a Bishop
On December 7, 1916, Norbert Klein was chosen to be the Bishop of Brno. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church. He was officially made a bishop on January 28, 1917.
Leading the Teutonic Knights
The Teutonic Order is a very old group. It started as a military order in the Middle Ages. By Norbert Klein's time, it was a religious order.
On April 30, 1923, Norbert Klein became the first Grand Master of the Teutonic Order who was also a priest. The previous Grand Master, Archduke Eugen of Austria, stepped down. He did this to help the Order keep its properties. These properties were in Austria and Czechoslovakia. The governments there were threatening to take them away.
Later Life and Legacy
On January 4, 1926, Norbert Klein resigned from his role as Bishop of Brno. He was then given the honorary title of Titular Bishop of Syene. This meant he still had the title of bishop but without a specific diocese to lead.
Norbert Klein passed away on March 10, 1933. He was buried in Bruntál, the same town where he died. His life showed a dedication to the church and the Teutonic Order.
