Early Life and Political Beginnings
Norbert Ratsirahonana was born in a place called Antsiranana in Madagascar. He started his own political party named Asa Vita no Ifampitsarana. This name means "Judged By Your Work" in English. His party was against the leader at that time, President Didier Ratsiraka.
In 1993, Norbert Ratsirahonana and his party joined with others to help Albert Zafy become president. After this, Ratsirahonana became the head of the High Constitutional Court. This court makes sure that laws follow the country's constitution.
Becoming a Leader: Prime Minister and Acting President
In May 1996, the Parliament removed the prime minister from his job. President Zafy then chose Norbert Ratsirahonana to be the new Prime Minister.
Soon after, President Zafy himself was removed from office. So, on September 5, 1996, Ratsirahonana became the acting President of Madagascar. This meant he was in charge until a new president could be chosen.
Presidential Election and New Roles
A new election for president was held in November 1996. Ratsirahonana ran in this election. He came in fourth place and received about 10% of the votes.
In the second round of the election, Ratsirahonana supported Albert Zafy. However, Didier Ratsiraka won the election. Ratsirahonana stopped being acting President when Ratsiraka officially took office in February 1997. A few days later, he also lost his job as Prime Minister when Ratsiraka appointed someone else.
After this, Ratsirahonana's party, AVI, became the main opposition party. This means they worked against the ruling party. However, the AVI party became much weaker.
Later Political Activities
In September 1997, Ratsirahonana became a leader in a group of opposition parties called the Panorama Group.
Later, in the 2001 presidential election, Ratsirahonana decided not to run. Instead, he supported Marc Ravalomanana, who became president. President Ravalomanana then appointed Ratsirahonana as a special "roaming ambassador." This meant he traveled to represent the president.
However, in 2006, Ratsirahonana left this job. In August 2006, he announced that he would run for president again in the December 2006 election. He received about 4% of the votes and came in fifth place.
Role in the 2009 Political Crisis
During the political crisis in 2009, the military announced that they were putting Andry Rajoelina in charge. Norbert Ratsirahonana was present at this event. Rajoelina then created a new ruling group called the High Authority of the Transition (HAT). On March 31, 2009, Ratsirahonana was named as one of the 44 members of this new group.
