Life and Political Journey
Early Life and Starting a Party
Norbert Ratsirahonana was born in Antsiranana, a city in Madagascar. He started his own political group called the Asa Vita no Ifampitsarana (AVI) Party. This name means "Judged By Your Work." His party was against the then-President, Didier Ratsiraka.
In 1993, his party joined with others to help Albert Zafy become President. After Zafy won, Ratsirahonana became the head of the High Constitutional Court. This court makes sure the country's laws follow the constitution.
Becoming Prime Minister and Acting President
In May 1996, the Parliament voted to remove the prime minister from his job. President Zafy then chose Ratsirahonana to become the new Prime Minister.
Soon after, President Zafy faced a process to remove him from office. On September 5, 1996, Ratsirahonana became the acting President of Madagascar. This meant he was in charge until a new president could be chosen.
Presidential Election and New Leadership
A new presidential election was held in November 1996. Ratsirahonana ran in this election. He finished in fourth place, getting about 10% of the votes.
In the second round of the election, Ratsirahonana supported Albert Zafy. However, Didier Ratsiraka won the election by a small margin. Ratsirahonana stopped being acting President when Ratsiraka officially took office in February 1997. A few days later, he also lost his job as Prime Minister. Ratsiraka appointed one of his own supporters to that role.
After this, Ratsirahonana's AVI party became the main opposition party. However, it became much weaker. In the 1998 parliamentary election, it won only 13 out of 150 seats.
Later Political Roles
In September 1997, Ratsirahonana became the leader of a group of opposition parties called the Panorama Group.
He decided not to run in the December 2001 presidential election. Instead, he supported Marc Ravalomanana for president. When Ravalomanana became president, Ratsirahonana was given a special job as the president's "roaming ambassador."
However, in 2006, Ratsirahonana left this job. In August 2006, he announced he would run for president again in the December 2006 election. Official results showed he received about 4% of the votes, placing him fifth. He did best in the Antananarivo Province.
During the 2009 political crisis, the military announced that Andry Rajoelina would become the new head of state. Ratsirahonana was present at this event. Rajoelina then set up a new ruling group called the High Authority of the Transition (HAT). Ratsirahonana was chosen as one of the 44 members of this group in March 2009.
