Presidential Term Limits
The Constitution of Madagascar states that a president can serve for a maximum of two terms. Each term lasts for five years. So far, no president has served for the full two terms allowed.
How a New President is Chosen
If the president's position becomes empty, the president of the Senate usually steps in temporarily. This person acts as the president until a new one can be chosen. Following a significant change in government in 2025, Colonel Michael Randrianirina was appointed as the interim president. He officially took office on October 14, 2025.
