French Community facts for kids
The French Community (in French: French: Communauté française) was a group formed in 1958. It took the place of the French Union.
Under France's 1958 Constitution, countries that joined the Community were mostly former French colonies. They gained a lot of independence. However, France still managed important things like their money, defense, foreign relations, and national security.
When the Community started, French President Charles de Gaulle said that any country could choose to become fully independent. Most French-ruled territories in sub-Saharan Africa joined the French Community. Only Guinea chose not to join, after a special vote in 1958. All the other countries that joined became fully independent in 1960.
