The History of Norlina
Norlina has an interesting history connected to railroads. It was first known as "Ridgeway Junction" in 1837. This was because a railroad track passed through the area.
People living nearby started selling wood and water to the trains. This small business grew over time. By the 1860s, the area was called the "Woodyard."
In the 1870s, the area kept growing and became known simply as the "Junction." A new railroad company, the Seaboard & Raleigh Railroad, was formed. This made the "Junction" a busy place for business.
A small community started to form around the railroad stop. It had two hardware stores, a taxi service that used horses, and shops where people worked with metal.
By 1900, a man named John Williams helped create the Seaboard Air Line Railway. This railway grew to be over 4,680 miles long. The small group of people at the "Junction" had helped turn a simple railway stop into a real town.
Finally, in 1913, the town got its current name, Norlina. This name was created by taking the beginning of "North" and the end of "Carolina."
