Norman Crooks: A Community Builder

Norman Crooks played a key role in creating the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. This community was officially formed in 1969. It was built on land near Prior Lake, Minnesota.

Founding the Community

The land for the community had a long history. The U.S. government set it aside in the 1880s. This was for Native Americans who had supported the U.S. during a conflict called the Dakota War of 1862. This war was a difficult time for many people.

Norman Crooks helped bring the community together. He was one of its main founders.

First Chairman and New Beginnings

In 1969, Norman Crooks became the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community's first Chairman. This was a big step for the community. He helped guide them in their early years.

Bringing Economic Growth

Under Chairman Crooks' leadership, the community started new projects. In 1982, he oversaw the opening of the Little Six. This was the community's first bingo hall.

The Little Six, now known as the Little Six Casino, was very important. It helped the community create jobs and earn money. This success paved the way for bigger projects. The Mystic Lake Casino opened later in 1992. These businesses helped the community become strong and self-sufficient.
