The North Bend Ranger Station is a group of buildings used by the USDA Forest Service. You can find it in the beautiful Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. These buildings were put up in 1936 by a special group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Because of their unique look and important history, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The station is important for two main reasons. First, its buildings show a cool, old-fashioned style called "rustic architecture." Second, it's connected to the "New Deal" programs, which were big government efforts to help people during tough times in the 1930s.

What's at the Station?

The North Bend Ranger Station has eight buildings that are considered historically important. It also has eight other buildings. The style of these buildings is known as "distinctive Pacific Northwest rustic." This means they look like they belong in the natural forest setting.

Here are some of the main historic buildings:

  • The recreation office is a one-story wooden building. It was built in 1936.
  • The equipment repair shop is also a one-story wooden building from 1936. It was later connected to another shop in 1938.
  • The fire office is a one-story wooden building. It was built in 1937.
  • The warehouse is a one-and-a-half-story wooden building. It's also known as the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest Fire Warehouse.
  • The crew house is a one-story wooden building. It was built in 1936.
  • There are two homes with garages. Both are one-and-a-half-story wooden buildings.
  • The storage building is a one-story wooden building. It was built in 1935.

A Look Back: How It Was Built

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a special program started by the United States government. It was part of the "New Deal" efforts during the Great Depression. The CCC gave jobs to young, unemployed men. Their main task was to work on projects that helped protect America's natural resources.

The United States Army helped manage the CCC camps. However, groups like the National Forest Service guided the actual work projects. The men from a place called Camp North Bend were the ones who built the North Bend Ranger Station.

Today, the old warehouse building is used as a visitor information center. People can also buy entrance passes for the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and other federal lands there. The station's conference hall is used for training, education, and public meetings.
