North City is a small village located in Franklin County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 509 people lived there. North City is also known by another name, "Coello." The current mayor of the village is Curtis Overton.
History of North City
North City became an official village in 1915. Its name comes from two coal mines nearby. These mines were called "New North" and "Old North." A post office opened in 1918. It was named "Coello" after its first postmaster, Pete Coello. Both "North City" and "Coello" are still used to refer to the village today.
Geography and Location
North City is in the western part of Franklin County. It is located at 37°59′35″N 89°3′56″W / 37.99306°N 89.06556°W. The city of Christopher is just south of North City.
Illinois Route 148 goes through the eastern side of the village. This road leads north about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to Valier. It also goes north about 7 miles (11 km) to Sesser. If you go south on Route 148, you'll pass through Christopher. It's about 7 miles (11 km) to Zeigler.
Illinois Route 14 is just south of North City. This road goes east about 7.5 miles (12.1 km) to Benton. Benton is the main town in Franklin County. Route 14 also goes west about 12 miles (19 km) to Du Quoin.
In 2021, North City had a total area of about 2.23 square miles (5.77 km²). Most of this area, about 2.17 square miles (5.62 km²), is land. The rest, about 0.06 square miles (0.15 km²), is water.
