The North Fork Swannanoa River is a river in Buncombe County, North Carolina. It flows for about 11.23 miles (18.07 km). This river is a smaller stream that flows into the larger Swannanoa River.

Where Does the River Start and End?

The North Fork Swannanoa River begins in Buncombe County. It starts about half a mile south of a place called Walker Knob. This area is near the divide, or high ground, that separates it from the Cane River.

From its start, the river flows generally towards the south and southwest. It eventually joins the Swannanoa River in a town called Grovestone, North Carolina. Along its path, the river forms a lake called Burnett Reservoir. This reservoir is an important part of the water supply for the City of Asheville.

What is a Watershed?

A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river, lake, or ocean. The North Fork Swannanoa River drains an area of about 31.75 square miles (82.23 square kilometers).

This area gets a lot of rain, about 55.62 inches (141.27 cm) each year. A large part of the watershed, about 89%, is covered by forests. This means many trees help keep the water clean as it flows into the river.
