The North Grinnell Historic District is a special neighborhood in Grinnell, Iowa, United States. It's recognized as a nationally important historic area. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

It's a residential area, meaning people live there. It's located just west of the Grinnell College campus. Many of the buildings here are quite old and have interesting stories.

What Makes This District Special?

This historic district is home to many unique buildings and objects. When it was first listed, it had 272 important items. Most of these were buildings, but there were also some special historical objects.

Homes in the District

There are 157 houses in the North Grinnell Historic District. About three-quarters of these homes are two stories tall. You can also find smaller homes like bungalows and cottages. Some houses were built after World War II.

Most of the houses are made of wood. However, you can also see homes made of brick, concrete block, or stucco. This variety makes the neighborhood interesting to explore.

Other Buildings and Objects

Besides houses, there are 103 other buildings in the district. These include garages, barns, and even old carriage houses. These buildings show how people lived and worked long ago.

You can also spot six concrete hitching posts. These were used in the past to tie up horses. They are considered important historical objects.

The important history of this district spans from 1867 to 1958. This means many of the buildings you see today were built during this time. Several different architects designed homes in the area.
