North Sikkim is a district in the Indian state of Sikkim. Its main town, where the district's offices are, is called Mangan. It is one of the least populated districts in India.

North Sikkim is the largest of the four districts in the state of Sikkim. The temperatures here can change a lot. In some areas, it can be around 25°C, but in the very high mountains, where the land is over 6,000 meters tall, it can get colder than −40°C!

Kanchenjunga is the highest mountain peak in the area, standing over 8,000 meters tall. This huge mountain is located on the western border with Nepal. You can see it very clearly from the town of Singhik.

A part of the large Khangchendzonga National Park is also found within this district.

Economy and Development

The town of Mangan is often called the "Cardamom Capital" of the world. This is because the climate and the land in North Sikkim are perfect for growing a special, larger type of Cardamom.

To help improve the lives of its people, North Sikkim receives special funds from the government. This funding helps the district develop and grow.

People of North Sikkim

According to a count done in 2011, about 43,354 people live in North Sikkim district. This number is roughly the same as the entire population of the country of Liechtenstein!

North Sikkim is one of the districts in India with the fewest people. There are about 10 people living in every square kilometer of land. Between 2001 and 2011, the population of the district grew by a small amount, about 5.66%.

For every 1000 males in North Sikkim, there were about 769 females. Most people in the district, about 77.39%, can read and write.
