North and South Barrow Islands are two small islands located in Ninian Bay, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. These islands are a special part of the amazing Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. They are found about 90 kilometers (or about 56 miles) southeast of a place called Cape Melville.
About the Barrow Islands
The North and South Barrow Islands are close to a spot on the mainland called Barrow Point. This point is just a few hundred meters away. The islands are named after this nearby point.
How They Got Their Name
Barrow Point got its name way back in May 1815. A naval officer named Lieutenant Charles Jeffreys, who was on the ship Kangaroo, named it. He likely named it after John Barrow. John Barrow was a very important person at the time. He was the Secretary to the Admiralty, which means he helped manage the British Navy.
Part of the Great Barrier Reef
Being part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park means these islands are in a protected area. This park is one of the world's natural wonders. It helps to protect the coral reefs, fish, and other marine life that live there. The islands themselves might be small, but they are important for the health of this huge ecosystem.
