A Look at History
The history of Northern Kurdistan is closely tied to the history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. For centuries, the Kurdish people lived in areas that were part of the Ottoman Empire. After the empire fell, new countries were formed.
The Treaty of Sèvres
After World War I, the Treaty of Sèvres was signed in 1920. This treaty suggested the creation of an independent Kurdistan. However, this plan never fully happened. The borders of modern Turkey were later set by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. This treaty did not include a separate Kurdish state. As a result, the Kurdish areas became part of the new Republic of Turkey.
