History of Northgate Mall
Northgate Mall was built in 1972 by a company called Arlen Shopping Center Group. This company later became part of CBL & Associates Properties (CBL). The land where the mall now stands was originally planned for a drive-in movie theater.
Early Days and Competition
When Northgate Mall first opened, it was seen as a rival to another mall in Chattanooga called Eastgate Mall. Eastgate Mall is no longer open today. Over time, Northgate became a "sister property" to CBL's Hamilton Place Mall. This means they are both owned by the same company.
Changes in Ownership and Upgrades
Arlen Shopping Center Group eventually sold Northgate Mall. The mall received major updates in 1991 and again in 1997. In 2000, a company called General Growth Properties (GGP) took ownership of the mall. GGP expanded Northgate between 2005 and 2008. Then, in September 2011, GGP sold the mall to CBL for $11.5 million.
New Features and Renovations
In 2005, a large movie theater with 14 screens opened at Northgate Mall. This theater was owned by Carmike Cinemas. There were also plans to build a new food court, but this project never happened.
In early 2013, Northgate Mall began a big renovation project. This project cost millions of dollars. The mall got new floors, updated ceilings, better lighting, and fresh paint. All these improvements were finished by Christmas 2013.
Around the same time, a shopping center located right across from Northgate's main entrance also got a makeover. This center added stores like T.J. Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, and Michael's Arts & Crafts. It also got a brand-new look on the outside.
Changes in Stores
In June 2013, the popular clothing store Old Navy announced it would be moving into Northgate Mall. However, in January 2014, JCPenney announced that its store at Northgate would close in June of that year. Later, on November 8, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store at this location would also close in early 2019. This was part of a plan to close 40 Sears stores.
