Northgate Shopping Centre is one of the biggest shopping centres in Tasmania. It is located in Glenorchy, which is about 10 kilometres northwest of Hobart. The centre is on the main road in Glenorchy's town centre.

All the shops are on one level, making it easy to get around. There is also a large undercover car park right below the main building. Before the shopping centre was built, this spot was home to the Glenorchy Tannery, a place where animal hides were processed.

About Northgate Shopping Centre

Northgate Shopping Centre is a popular place for shopping and meeting friends. It has many different stores for you to explore. You can find everything from clothes to food and gifts.

The centre is designed to be easy to use. All the stores are on a single floor. This means you don't have to go up or down stairs to visit different shops.

What Shops Are There?

Northgate Shopping Centre has many different types of shops. It has large main stores, called "anchor stores." These are big shops that attract many visitors.

Currently, the centre has a Coles Supermarket and a Woolworths Supermarket. These are great for buying groceries. There are also about 65 other smaller, special shops. These shops sell all sorts of things, like clothes, electronics, and food.

Getting to Northgate

The shopping centre is easy to reach. It is located right on the Main Road in Glenorchy. This is a busy area in the heart of the town.

If you are driving, there is a big car park. It is located underneath the main building. This means your car stays protected from the weather.

History of Northgate

Northgate Shopping Centre first opened its doors in November 1986. When it first opened, it was a smaller centre. It had a Coles Supermarket as its main store. There were also 46 other smaller shops.

Centre Expansions and Changes

The shopping centre has grown and changed over the years. In October 1995, it was made bigger and updated. This helped it to offer more to shoppers.

In the early 2000s, two more big stores joined the centre. These were Target and Best & Less. They became important anchor stores.

The centre has also had some challenges. In 2002, there were power cuts. In 2005, a fire happened at the centre.

New Owners and Updates

For a while, Northgate was part of the Westfield group of shopping centres. In 2009, a company called Novion Property Group became the owner. This company later joined with another to become Vicinity Centres in 2015.

In 2016, the centre got a fresh new look. The main entrance was renovated. The centre also got a new logo, using the ribbon design from Vicinity Centres.

In early 2022, the Target department store closed. But a new Woolworths Supermarket opened in that space on November 4, 2022. This brought a new grocery option to the centre.
