Northome is a special kind of area in Koochiching County, Minnesota, United States. It's called an "unorganized territory." This means it's a part of the county that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a town. Instead, the county government handles things for it.

In 2000, about 496 people lived in Northome. The name "Northome" comes from the nearby city of Northome. The only other city in this area is Mizpah. This unorganized territory covers the southwestern part of Koochiching County, but it doesn't include these two cities.

Long ago, this territory had several smaller areas called townships, like Bridgie and Wildwood. But these townships were officially ended in 1950. After that, Koochiching County took over all the duties and responsibilities for these areas.

Geography of Northome Territory

The Northome unorganized territory is quite large. It covers about 297.3 square miles (770.0 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 296.0 square miles (766.6 square kilometers), is land. A smaller part, about 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilometers), is water. This means there are lakes, rivers, or other water bodies within its borders.

Who Lives in Northome Territory?

Based on the 2000 census, there were 496 people living in the Northome unorganized territory. These people lived in 192 different homes, and 143 of these were families.

Most of the people living there were White (about 96%). A smaller number were Native American (about 3.4%). A very small percentage were Pacific Islander. About 1% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Families and Age Groups

Out of the 192 homes, about 31% had children under 18 living there. Most homes (about 65%) were married couples living together. About 23% of homes had people living alone.

The people in Northome territory were of different ages. About 27% were under 18 years old. About 16% were 65 years old or older. The average age of people living there was 42 years old. For every 100 females, there were about 111 males.
