The Northport Historic District is a special part of Northport, Alabama. It's like a time capsule showing what the town looked like long ago. This area is the main business center of Northport. It helps us remember the history and growth of this Alabama town.

Northport's Historic Heart

This district covers 20 city blocks. It includes 134 different buildings. Most of these buildings were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many were built between 1920 and 1925. This was a time when the town was being rebuilt.

A Look Back in Time

Northport faced some tough times in its past. A big fire in 1850 caused a lot of damage. Then, the American Civil War also slowed down the town's growth. After these challenges, Northport began to rebuild. The new buildings helped the town come back to life. Some of the oldest buildings in the district date all the way back to 1840.

What You'll See There

Most of the buildings in the district are for businesses. They are usually made of brick. You will see buildings that are one or two stories tall. They often have flat roofs. There are also seven old wooden warehouses still standing. These buildings show the different styles of architecture from the past. They tell a story about how Northport grew over the years.

Becoming a Historic Place

The Northport Historic District is very important. Because of its history and unique buildings, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on May 1, 1980. Being on this list means the district is recognized as a special place in American history. It helps protect these old buildings for future generations to enjoy.
