Northport is a city in Tuscaloosa County, located in the west-central part of Alabama. It sits on the Black Warrior River, right across from downtown Tuscaloosa.
Northport was officially made a city in 1871. In 2020, about 31,125 people lived there, making it the 17th largest city in Alabama. It is part of the larger Tuscaloosa metropolitan area.

About Northport's Location
Northport is very close to the bigger city of Tuscaloosa. Many people who live in Northport also work in Tuscaloosa or other nearby areas in Tuscaloosa County.
The Black Warrior River forms a big part of the border between Northport and Tuscaloosa. Both cities grew up near a special spot on the river. This spot is where the Appalachian Mountains meet the flat Gulf Coastal Plain. Northport is on the north side of the river.
The U.S. Census Bureau says Northport covers about 17.66 square miles (45.74 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Northport is known for its fun cultural activities.
Kentuck Festival of the Arts
One of the biggest events is the Kentuck Festival of the Arts. Every October, artists come to Kentuck Park to show their amazing work. This festival celebrates both folk art (traditional art) and modern art. You can also see people demonstrating traditional crafts like pottery, quilting, and basket making.
For over 50 years, the festival was held in Kentuck Park. However, starting in 2024, the festival will move to Tuscaloosa. This change happened because Northport is developing Kentuck Park into a sports complex.
Art Night
Another cool tradition in Northport is Art Night. It happens on the first Thursday of every month. Many art galleries in Northport stay open late for this event. You can often see artists giving demonstrations. A special bus even runs between downtown Northport and downtown Tuscaloosa for this event.
Dickens Downtown
In December, Northport hosts Dickens Downtown. This annual holiday event makes the city look like 19th-century England. It's a fun way to get into the holiday spirit!
Northport Heritage Museum
The Northport Heritage Museum has a collection of old items and photos. These show the history of the city and how it has changed over time.
Future Water Park
Northport is planning to build a new water park! This big project is expected to be finished by 2025. It will cost about $22 million. Some local residents are concerned about the water park. They worry it might cause more noise, traffic, and affect home values. Also, some long-time farming communities nearby are worried about the city growing into their area.
