Northwood House is a special old building in Northwood, Australia. It was once a home for children with special needs. Today, it is a private house. The famous architect Edmund Blacket designed it, and it was built in 1878. This house is also known as Northwood House & Cottage. It is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register because it is an important part of history.

History of Northwood House

Northwood House was built in 1878 for a lady named Mrs. Jane Davy. The design was created by architect Edmund Blacket. Two brothers, John and James Eaton, built the house.

How Northwood Got Its Name

In 1874, Mrs. Davy bought a large piece of land, about 34 acres, near the Lane Cove River. She later bought even more land. The area where her house stood is now called Northwood, named after Northwood House. The house had its own private dock for boats. Later, a public ferry dock was built nearby for everyone to use. Mrs. Davy also gave three acres of her land to the local council to create a park.

Important Families and Owners

Mrs. Davy was part of the well-known Dawson family from Neutral Bay. She was very involved in the community of Lane Cove. Her son became a local council member. Her son-in-law, Joseph James Neave, was a very important Quaker. Quakers are a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs. Joseph James Neave even helped a group of people called the Dukhobors move from Russia to Canada in 1899.

After Mrs. Davy passed away in 1903, the house and land were sold. In 1905, a businessman named Abdul Wade bought it. He was originally from Afghanistan and was known for his camel transport business. He also had interests in mining and wool. Abdul Wade lived in Northwood House with his wife, Emily, and their six children for several years. He later divided the land into smaller blocks and sold them before leaving Australia in 1923. Around 1919, the house's roof was changed from wood shingles to tiles. A new two-story porch was also added.

Many important families have lived in Northwood House since then. During World War II, the owners used the house as a school for children with mental disabilities.

Protecting Northwood House

Because Northwood House is so important, steps were taken to protect it. In 1984, a temporary order was put in place to stop parts of the property from being sold or changed. Then, in 1986, a permanent order was made to protect the house. This means it is now a heritage-listed building. It was officially added to the State Heritage Register in 1999.
