The striped threadtail (Nososticta mouldsi) is a special type of damselfly found only in Australia. It belongs to a family of insects called Platycnemididae.
This damselfly is quite small and has a thin body. Male striped threadtails are black with bright blue markings. Females are also black, but they have pale yellow-brown markings instead of blue.
Where Do Striped Threadtails Live?
The striped threadtail has only been found in the Northern Territory of Australia. It likes to live near streams in rainforests. These streams provide the perfect home for them to grow and hunt.
Are They Rare?
Yes, the striped threadtail is considered quite rare. As of February 2018, there were only five official records of this species. Scientists keep track of animal sightings on websites like the Atlas of Living Australia. This helps them understand how many animals there are and where they live. Because so few have been seen, we don't know a lot about them yet.
