Nueva Pescanova (which used to be called Pescanova, S.A.) is a big Spanish company that works with seafood. Its main office is in Redondela, a town in Galicia, Spain. This company works in 17 different countries and has about 12,400 employees around the world.
About the Company
Nueva Pescanova's main office is in Pontevedra, Redondela, Spain. The company operates in 17 countries. It owns more than 60 fishing boats. It also has fish farms in Spain, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Ecuador.
The person in charge of the company, called the chief executive officer, is José María Benavent Valero.
How It Started
Pescanova was started in 1960 by José Fernández López. He set up the company in Vigo, Spain. From the very beginning, Pescanova used new ways to process fish. They were one of the first in Spain to use a special kind of boat called a factory ship. This ship could catch and process fish right on board.
This new way of doing business worked very well. The company grew steadily and became one of the largest in the fishing industry.
In 1980, Manuel Fernández de Sousa-Faro, the founder's son, became the president. He helped the company grow even more, turning Pescanova into a large international business. In 1985, the company's shares started to be traded on the Madrid Stock Exchange.
Facing Challenges
In April 2013, Pescanova faced big financial problems. The company had to ask a Spanish court for help because it owed a lot of money. This was a very difficult time for the company.
Many people and groups wanted to help Pescanova get back on its feet. Several investment groups and major banks in Spain became interested in helping the company. They worked together to find a way for Pescanova to continue operating.
After a lot of hard work and planning, the company successfully got out of its financial difficulties. This happened in May 2014. Pescanova was able to continue as one of Galicia's important international companies.
The company continued to be managed carefully. By February 2015, Pescanova was doing much better. It even reported profits, which was a big change from its earlier losses. After these challenges, a new main company called Nueva Pescanova, S.L. was formed. This new company took control of the group's businesses.
Recent History
In February 2023, due to rising costs around the world, Nueva Pescanova was in talks with two companies, Cooke from Canada and Red Chamber from America, about possibly buying the company.
Octopus Farming
Nueva Pescanova was the first company in the world to successfully raise octopuses in special farms. This means they learned how to breed octopuses in tanks, not just catch them from the ocean.
In 2023, the company planned to build a large octopus farm in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. However, this plan received some concerns from scientists and groups that care about animal welfare. Organizations like Compassion in World Farming and Eurogroup for Animals shared their objections to the idea.
