Where is Nuevo Chagres?

- By 2000, the population grew to 419 people.
- In 2010, the population reached 499 people.
Why is it Called 'New' Chagres?
The town gets its name from an older, historical settlement called Chagres. This original town was located about 8.2 miles (13.2 kilometers) to the northwest, right at the mouth of the Chagres River.
A New Home for Residents
The original town of Chagres was very old and important. However, when the Panama Canal Zone was being built and expanded, the area around the Chagres River's mouth was included in the Canal Zone in 1916. Because of this, the old town of Chagres, which had about 96 houses and 400 to 500 people, had to be emptied. Its residents were then moved to the new location, which became known as Nuevo Chagres, or "New Chagres."
