Nuevo Nayarit (pronounced 'nweβo na.ʝaˈɾit̪') used to be called Nuevo Vallarta. It is a special community built for homes and resorts. You can find it in the Bahía de Banderas area, in the Mexican state of Nayarit. It's only about a fifteen-minute drive north from Puerto Vallarta's main airport. Many tourists from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom visit Nuevo Nayarit. You can pay for things in Mexican pesos or U.S. dollars at the many shops and malls.

History of Nuevo Nayarit

The Mexican government started building this community over twenty years ago. Today, Nuevo Nayarit has many fancy villas and large homes. These homes often have canals with beautiful tropical gardens. Each home along the canals might even have its own private dock for boats.

The area also has new, luxurious resorts. These resorts are located along more than 5 miles of white sandy beaches. There is also a marina for boats. This marina is very modern and has 3,000 spaces for boats. It also has a PADI 1-Star Career Development Dive Center, which is a place where you can learn to dive. You can also find condominiums here, which are like apartments, for both visitors and people who live there.

Between 1980 and 1990, the number of people living in Nuevo Nayarit grew a lot. The population went from 57,028 to 111,457 people. A new part of the marina is being built right now. Workers are removing old docks and building six new ones. These new docks will have 230 spots for boats, ranging from 22 to 130 feet long.

Wildlife and Weather

Loggerhead Sea Turtles

In the winter, special caguama turtles come to the beaches of Nuevo Nayarit. They lay their eggs in the sand. These caguama turtles have been in danger of disappearing since 1978. To protect them, biologists and environmentalists help take care of the turtle eggs in safe places.

Climate and Temperature

The weather in Nuevo Nayarit is warm, similar to Puerto Vallarta. It is a little less wet because mountains around the bay protect the area from most hurricanes. The average temperature each year is about 25°C (77°F). In the summer months, the highest temperatures can reach about 32°C (90°F).
