Nutrioso is a small community in Apache County, Arizona, United States. It is not a city or town, but a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city.

Nutrioso is located along U.S. Route 180 and U.S. Route 191. It is about 12 miles (19 km) south-southeast of a town called Eagar. The community has its own post office with the ZIP code 85932. In 2010, 26 people lived there. By 2020, the population grew to 39 people.

History of Nutrioso

Nutrioso got its name from the Spanish word Nutria. This word means "Otter". Early Spanish explorers often used "nutria" to describe beavers too. This might be because beavers had disappeared from Spain a long time ago.

How Nutrioso Got Its Name

On August 2, 1776, a Spanish explorer named Francisco Silvestre Vélez de Escalante wrote in his diary. He mentioned a stream called "Rio de las Nutrias." He said it had permanent water and pools where beavers were thought to live.

There are a few stories about how Nutrioso got its name:

  • Some say early settlers killed an otter and a bear (Oso in Spanish) and combined the words.
  • Others believe they killed a beaver and a bear, using "Nutria" for the beaver.
  • Another idea is that they only killed a beaver and used "Nutrioso" to mean "Of Beavers."

Growth of the Community

Nutrioso became more important when Mormon families moved there. They were seeking safety after other nearby settlements faced attacks from Native American groups. By 1880, a fort was built in Nutrioso to protect the residents. A few years later, in 1883, a post office was opened, which helped the community grow.
