Nuvuttiq (ᓄᕗᑦᑎᖅ), once known as Cape Searle, is a special place in Canada. It's a headland, which is a piece of land that sticks out into the sea. You can find Nuvuttiq on the northeastern tip of Qaqaluit Island in Nunavut. This area is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region.
This headland got its original name, Cape Searle, from an Arctic explorer named John Ross. He named it on September 17, 1818. He chose the name to honor John Clark Searle, who was in charge of the Victualling Board at that time.
Geography of Nuvuttiq
Nuvuttiq is a beautiful area with tall coastal cliffs and rocky shores. It covers about 2 square kilometers (0.77 square miles) of land. The highest point of Nuvuttiq rises about 450 meters (1,476 feet) above the sea.
Wildlife at Nuvuttiq
Nuvuttiq is very important for birds! It is home to the largest group of northern fulmar birds in all of Canada. Northern fulmars are seabirds that look a bit like gulls but are related to albatrosses. They spend most of their lives flying over the ocean.
Protecting Nuvuttiq's Habitat
Because Nuvuttiq is so important for birds, it has been given special protection.
- It is a Canadian Important Bird Area (its code is #NU003). This means it's a place that birds really need to survive.
- It is also an International Biological Program site. This program helps protect places that are important for studying nature.
- Finally, it's a Key Terrestrial Bird Habitat site. This means it's a crucial land area where birds live and raise their young. These protections help make sure the northern fulmars and other wildlife can thrive safely at Nuvuttiq.
