The Nyctimystes cryptochrysos is a special type of tree frog found in Papua New Guinea. This frog makes its home on Fergusson Island, living high up in the mountains between 900 and 1500 meters (about 3,000 to 5,000 feet) above sea level. Scientists believe it might also live on other nearby islands called the D'Entrecasteaux Islands.

What it Looks Like

This tree frog has some interesting features! Male frogs are usually about 4.8 to 5.1 centimeters (around 1.9 to 2 inches) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring about 6.1 to 6.5 centimeters (around 2.4 to 2.6 inches) long.

Most of the frog's back is a mix of light and dark brown colors, which helps it blend in with its surroundings. One cool thing about this frog is that it has special up-and-down lines on its lower eyelids. It also has a unique gold color on its legs and the middle part of its body.

Its Name Means "Hidden Gold"

The scientific name for this frog, Nyctimystes cryptochrysos, has a cool meaning. The word cryptochrysos comes from the Greek words kryptos, which means "hidden," and chrysos, which means "gold." So, its name literally means "hidden gold." This refers to the gold coloring found on the middle of the frog's body, which might not always be easy to spot!
