Nymagee's Past: A Mining Town
Nymagee started as a town built around a copper mine. When the mine was busy, over 2,200 people lived here! About half of these people were Chinese migrants who came to work.
However, the mine closed in 1917. After that, most people left Nymagee. By 1949, many thought of Nymagee as a "ghost town" because so few people lived there. Even so, it still had a hall, a racecourse, and clubs for sports and social events.
A person named Tong Mow had a market garden in Nymagee. He grew fresh food for the town until he had to stop in 1920 because he was not well.
Bringing Nymagee Back to Life
In 1999, people living in Nymagee decided to start an outback music festival. They hoped this would bring more tourists and new residents to the town. The first festival was a big success, with 600 visitors!
Since then, the festival has helped Nymagee's tourism grow by 60%. It has also helped more people decide to live in the town permanently.
Nymagee and Famous Poems
Nymagee is also connected to a famous Australian poem called "Clancy of the Overflow". This poem was written by a well-known bush poet named Banjo Paterson. The poem features a sheep station called "The Overflow," which is located about 32 kilometres (20 miles) south-east of Nymagee.
New Mining Plans
In March 2023, a new plan for a mine just outside Nymagee was approved. This could bring more activity to the area in the future.
