Nätti-Jussi was born in August 1890 in Karstula, Central Finland. He grew up in a family of six. His father, Juho Nätti, was a log driver. His mother was Maija Nätti. He also had three sisters.
As he grew up, Nätti-Jussi moved north with his family. They went to the logging sites in Lapland. He worked there for most of his life. He was a well-known lumberjack in places like Tervola, Pisa, Muurola, and Rovaniemi.
Nätti-Jussi's Life Story
Nätti-Jussi was also known for his clubfoot. This meant his left foot was turned backwards.
From the 1950s, Nätti-Jussi became unwell and was unable to move easily. He moved into a nursing home in Rautiosaari, Rovaniemi. He passed away on August 4, 1964, at the Palosalmi nursing home for lumberjacks.
He was buried in the Rovaniemi Viirinkangas cemetery. He shared a burial plot with other residents from the Palosalmi home.
In 2006, Nätti-Jussi received his own grave marker. It was unveiled on August 25, 2006. The marker has a special quote from Nätti-Jussi himself: "Over there, I was. Spoke with St. Peter about the sights for the coming winter, and agreed to work with him on a contractual basis, going about lighting the Northern Lights."
Nätti-Jussi's Legacy
Nätti-Jussi's fame led to his name being used for different things.
- The very first pizzeria in Rovaniemi was named "Il Bel Giovanni." This means "Pretty John" in Italian, which is what "Nätti-Jussi" means.
- In the late 1990s, a restaurant in Muurola was named the Nätti room. Muurola used to be a rural area near Rovaniemi.
- In 2003, a restaurant called Nätti-Jussi was opened in his hometown of Karstula.
- A bakery called Vaasan & Vaasan also makes a type of rye bread called Lapland Pakari Nätti-Jussi.
