A Look at Tervola's Past
Tervola got its name from its very first Finnish settler, a person named Olli Paavonpoika Tervonen. He was from a group of people called the Savonians. His name was written down on a tax list in the year 1579.
Before Olli Tervonen and his family arrived, the area along the Kemijoki river, between Paakkola and Rovaniemi, was mostly empty. Not many people lived there.
The Tervola area was first part of a larger region called Kemi. In 1627, it became a "chapel community," which is like a small church district, and was known as Lapinniemi. The name Tervola for the settlement itself was first used in 1796. Later, in 1860, Tervola became an independent parish, meaning it had its own church and local administration.
