O'Higgins is a special kind of area in Chile called a commune. It's located in the Capitán Prat Province, which is part of the Aisén Region in the south of Chile. This commune is found around a big lake called O'Higgins Lake.
The main town in O'Higgins is Villa O'Higgins. This is where the local government, called the municipality, is located.
O'Higgins is also home to many Sphagnum bogs. These are special types of wetlands where a plant called sphagnum moss grows. About 28.5% of all the sphagnum bogs in the Aisén Region are found right here in O'Higgins.
Who Lives in O'Higgins?
O'Higgins is a very large area, but not many people live there. According to a count done in 2002, there were 463 people living in the commune. Most of these people (277) were men, and 186 were women.
Because of its small population and large area, O'Higgins is considered an entirely rural area. This means it's mostly countryside, with no big cities or towns. The number of people living here grew by about 37% between 1992 and 2002.
How O'Higgins is Governed
As a commune, O'Higgins is a local area that manages its own affairs. It's like a small county or district. A group of people called a municipal council helps run the commune.
The person in charge of the municipality is called an alcalde. This is similar to a mayor in other countries. The alcalde is chosen by the people of O'Higgins in an election that happens every four years. The alcalde from 2008 to 2012 was José Fica Gómez.
