History of Oak Valley
The Gold Rush Era
Oak Valley got its start during the exciting California Gold Rush. Gold was found here around the same time it was discovered in other nearby areas. The community is named after the many oak trees that grew in the area.
A Bustling Mining Town
Once gold was discovered, Oak Valley quickly grew into a busy mining town. By 1855, about 100 men lived and worked there. The town had important businesses like a general store, a saloon, a restaurant, and a hotel. It was a lively place for about ten years.
Decline and Legacy
Like many gold rush towns, Oak Valley eventually saw its population shrink. As the gold became harder to find, people moved away. By 1879, only about 20 men were still working in the area. The town had just one building that served as both a store and a saloon.
Even though it's much smaller now, Oak Valley's history is still remembered. The town at its founding is even featured in Catherine Bell's 2014 novel, Rush of Shadows.
