Oakdale is a historic plantation located in Daisy, near Woodbine in Howard County, Maryland. It was once the home of Edwin Warfield, who became the governor of Maryland.

What is Oakdale?

Oakdale is a very old and important property. It's known as a historic plantation. This means it was a large farm with many buildings. The main house is a beautiful brick building. It has a special design called Palladian architecture.

A Look Back in Time

The land where Oakdale stands was first given out in 1766. The main house was built much later, in 1838. It was built by Albert Gallatin Warfield. He was a great-grandson of Captain Benjamin Warfield.

The Warfield Family Home

In 1891, Edwin Warfield moved to Oakdale Manor. He moved there after his father passed away. Edwin Warfield made the house much bigger. He added many rooms, making it over twenty rooms in total.

Edwin Warfield served in Company A of the Confederate States of America. Later, in 1904, he became the governor of Maryland. He even hosted troops at Oakdale in 1907. These troops were led by Clinton L. Riggs. Edwin Warfield's grandson, Edwin Warfield III, sold the manor in the mid-1970s.

Buildings at Oakdale

Besides the main house, Oakdale has several other old buildings. There is a log slave quarters that was built before 1838. There's also a tenant house, which was for workers. You can also find a carriage house where carriages were kept. A smokehouse and a barn are also on the property. One unique building is an Octagon glass greenhouse.

Oakdale Today

After the Warfield family, the property was divided. The manor house now sits on 54 acres. James F. Jackson III bought it in 1974. He worked to restore the old house.

In 1980, Ted Mariani bought the house. He added a solarium, which is a sunny room. In 2014, he planned to change the farm's use. Instead of growing crops like corn and soybeans, he wanted to open a winery. He also planned to use it for special events. In December 2014, Oakdale was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.
