Oakwood is found in the northeastern part of Leon County. While most of the town is in Leon County, a small section extends north into Freestone County.

The main road that goes through Oakwood is U.S. Route 79. This road is also known as Broad Street in town. If you travel northeast on this road, you will reach Palestine in about 18 miles. If you go southwest, you will get to Buffalo in about 15 miles.
