Oatmeal creme pies are yummy snack cakes made by McKee Foods. They were the very first snack created for the famous Little Debbie brand. Each pie has two soft oatmeal cookies with a sweet, fluffy creme filling in the middle.

You can find Oatmeal Creme Pies and other Little Debbie snacks in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. In 2020, even Kellogg's made a special cereal inspired by these popular pies!

The Story of Oatmeal Creme Pies

The first Oatmeal Creme Pie was made in 1935 by a man named Oather "O.D." McKee. This was during a tough time called the Great Depression. O.D. McKee and his wife, Ruth, had just bought a bakery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The bakery already made simple cookies like oatmeal, raisin, and vanilla ones, selling them for just one cent each.

O.D. McKee had a great idea to sell more treats. He wanted to make a new kind of oatmeal cookie. Instead of a hard cookie, he made a soft one. Then, he put a creamy filling between two of these soft cookies to make a "sandwich." He sold these new oatmeal sandwich cookies for a nickel each.

This new snack was a big hit! In 1960, McKee started the Little Debbie brand. He began selling Oatmeal Creme Pies in bigger boxes for families, costing 49 cents. In the first 10 months, over 14 million Oatmeal Creme Pies were sold!
