An oatmeal raisin cookie is a yummy type of cookie. It's made with a dough that has lots of oatmeal and sweet raisins. You'll also usually find flour, sugar, eggs, salt, and different spices in them.

These cookies come from Scotland, where people made something called an oatcake. Oatmeal raisin cookies have become super popular, especially in the United States.

Back in the early 1900s, people thought oatmeal raisin cookies were a health food. This was because of the fiber and vitamins from the oatmeal and raisins. However, an oatmeal raisin cookie actually has about the same amount of sugar, fat, and calories as a chocolate chip cookie. They both offer some fiber too!

History of Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Long ago, in the Middle Ages, people in Scotland made oatcakes. These were like early versions of oatmeal cookies. They used similar ingredients but were usually much crispier than the soft cookies we eat today.

The very first recipe for an oatmeal cookie was printed in the United States. It was in a cookbook by Fannie Merritt Farmer in 1896. Her book was called the Boston Cooking-School Cook Book.

Fannie Farmer's first recipe didn't actually include raisins. But over time, adding raisins became very common. This happened partly because the Quaker Oats company started putting oatmeal raisin cookie recipes on their oatmeal containers in the early 1900s.
