History of Oatsville

Early Days and the Post Office

Oatsville had its own post office for many years. It first opened in 1876. This post office helped people in the community send and receive mail. It was an important part of daily life back then. The post office served the area for almost 30 years. It finally closed down in 1903.

The Tri-state Tornado's End

Oatsville is also known for a very powerful storm. The famous Tri-state Tornado ended near Oatsville. This huge tornado traveled across Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history. The tornado finally lost its strength around 4:30 PM on March 18, 1925. Scientists believe it was one of the strongest tornadoes ever. It was likely still a strong storm when it reached Oatsville.
