Obdurodon was an ancient animal that lived a long, long time ago. It was a type of monotreme, which is a special group of mammals that lay eggs, like the platypus and echidnas we see today.

Obdurodon was very similar to the modern platypus. However, there was one big difference: Obdurodon had teeth! Modern platypuses only have teeth when they are very young, and they lose them as they grow up. Obdurodon kept its teeth throughout its life.

What Was Obdurodon?

Obdurodon was a fascinating creature that looked a lot like a platypus. Imagine a platypus, but with a full set of teeth in its mouth. This ancient animal lived millions of years ago. Scientists know about Obdurodon because they have found its fossils. These fossils help us learn about animals that are no longer alive.

An Ancient Platypus Relative

Obdurodon belongs to the same family as the modern platypus. This family is called Ornithorhynchidae. Even though they are related, Obdurodon was unique because of its teeth. These teeth suggest that Obdurodon might have eaten different kinds of food than today's platypus. Modern platypuses mostly eat small water insects and worms.

Where Did Obdurodon Live?

Fossils of Obdurodon have been found in different parts of the world. Most of its fossils come from Australia. This is the same continent where modern platypuses live today.

Obdurodon in South America

Interestingly, one type of Obdurodon was also found in South America. This species is called Monotrematum sudamericanum. Finding its fossils so far from Australia was a big surprise for scientists! It shows that monotremes, like Obdurodon, once lived in more places around the world than they do now.

Different Kinds of Obdurodon

Scientists have identified a few different species of Obdurodon. Each species is a slightly different type of this ancient animal.

  • Obdurodon dicksoni: This species was found in a famous fossil site in Australia called Riversleigh.
  • Obdurodon insignis: This was one of the first Obdurodon species discovered. Its fossils also came from Australia.
  • Monotrematum sudamericanum: As mentioned, this unique species was found in South America. It tells us about the ancient connections between continents.

How Do We Know About Obdurodon?

Scientists learn about Obdurodon by studying its fossils. Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient life. For Obdurodon, scientists have found parts of its skull and teeth. These discoveries help them understand what the animal looked like and how it lived.

The first Obdurodon fossils were found in 1975. Since then, more discoveries have helped us learn even more about these amazing ancient egg-laying mammals.
