Oberia Dempsey's Early Life

Oberia Dempsey was born in 1914 in Roxton, Texas. His father was also a Baptist minister, which likely influenced young Oberia. He briefly attended Wiley College. During World War II, he joined the Army and served in Europe. After the war, he continued his education. He studied at Brooklyn College and later at New York University.

Becoming a Minister

In 1953, Oberia Dempsey became a minister. His first job was as the youth director at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn. This role allowed him to work with young people. Later, he became an associate minister at the well-known Abyssinian Baptist Church. He worked under the guidance of Adam Clayton Powell Jr., who was a very influential leader.

Leading His Own Church

In 1962, Oberia Dempsey decided to start his own church. He founded the Upper Park Avenue Baptist Church on 125th Street in Harlem. Even when the church moved to a new location, he continued to be its pastor. He was a dedicated leader who cared deeply for his congregation.

Helping the Community

Beyond his church work, Dempsey also founded a special clinic called House of Hope. This clinic was created to help people in need. It showed his commitment to supporting the wider community.

A Public Figure

In 1961, Dempsey also tried to enter politics. He ran in the Democratic primary election for the New York City Council. This council helps make decisions for New York City. He ran for the 21st District in Harlem. Although he didn't win the election, he received many votes, showing his support in the community.

His Legacy

Oberia Dempsey passed away on October 2, 1982, at the age of 67. He died at Harlem Hospital. He had four children, and one of them also became a minister, following in his footsteps.
