A Look at Obernberg's Past

The Town's Coat-of-Arms

Obernberg's coat-of-arms is a red shield with three golden skittles. A skittle is like a bowling pin. There is a fun legend about this symbol. It says that miners in the past were so rich they played games with real golden skittles!

How Obernberg Began

People have lived in the Obernberg valley for a very long time. They used the land for grazing animals even in the Bronze Age. The Romans came and settled here around 15 BC.

Later, people started mining in the area. They dug for gold, silver, copper, and lead. These mines were active until the 1500s. The town was first called "Padreins" in a document from 1238. The name "Obernberg" appeared around 1300. Before that, it was known as "Vinaders."

Mining was very important for the area. Nearby towns like St. Leonhard also grew because of it. They had places to melt the metals and store them. However, by 1560, new metals from other parts of the world arrived. This caused the local mines to close down.

The Old Church

A small church was built by miners in the 1300s. It was dedicated to Saint Nikolaus. As more people moved to the area, the church was made bigger. In the 1700s, a new, larger church was built. It became a parish church in 1891.
