Oconee, Nebraska facts for kids
Oconee is a small, quiet place located in Platte County, Nebraska, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
The Story of Oconee
Oconee wasn't always called Oconee! When it was first planned out in 1880, it was known as Lost Creek. To "plat" a place means that someone officially drew out the streets and lots for a new settlement.
Not long after, the name was changed to Oconee. It's thought that the name came from Oconee, Illinois, another village. That village in Illinois was named after the daughter of a local Native American chief. Her name was said to sound like the Shawnee language word for "bone."
A post office was opened in Oconee in 1887. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years before it closed down in 1916.
