Oconee State Park is a fun state park located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. This park is very large, covering about 1165 acres. It offers many cool things to do for visitors.

You can find cabins and camping spots here. There are also two small lakes where you can go fishing or boating. The park has eight different trails for hiking and exploring nature. Plus, there are places for picnics and group meetings.

Two famous hiking trails start or pass through Oconee State Park. The southern end of the Foothills Trail is here. Also, the western end of the Oconee Passage of the Palmetto Trail is located within the park.

Park History

Oconee State Park was built a long time ago, in the 1930s. This was during a very difficult time in American history. It was called the Great Depression. Many people did not have jobs or money.

To help people, President Franklin D. Roosevelt started a program. It was called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC hired young men to work on projects across the country. They built parks, roads, and other important things.

Many of the buildings you see at Oconee State Park today were made by the CCC. This includes 15 cabins, the park superintendent's house, and several shelters. They also built the swimming lake and its bath house. These old buildings are now considered very important. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This means they are special historical places that are protected.
